Her outlook is that “eco-friendly design is not only about creating functional pieces, with little harm to the environment; but is about being socially responsible in terms of the materials, suppliers and partners used in creating the final product”.
This is why Cara has made it her business philosophy to uplift marginalised South Africans, highlighted by her creation of Women’s Empowerment Groups in and around Cape Town. These project groups focus on teaching crafting skills such as knitting and crocheting to women who then, armed with their needles and fabric, can assist in the development of her designs from their own homes. This approach means that the overall carbon footprint is at a minimal and that each product sold has helped to create a job for these talented women.
By reusing 100% recycled fabrics and natural materials, Cara recreates an Eco-aware Homeware Range, each piece uniquely handmade. She already has industry mouths a movin’ with her signature use of thick fabric as the knitting “yarn” creating an original end product with a new found integrity. Cara’s talent was recognised upon entering her knitted rug, “Cotton On...” into the Green Designers at Woolworths Competition (2010). She was selected as one of ten finalists and her conceptual design was showcased at the Design Indaba and featured in House and Leisure magazine. Cara’s designs epitomise her personality. Her trademark use of texture translates her vision and each contemporary creation is infused with a sense of quirky fun.
